Obtain a Status Letter

A Status Letter documents a licensee’s status and confirms whether they are entitled to practise law or provide legal services in Ontario. The letter will also include the date the lawyer or paralegal was licensed.

How to Order a Status Letter

Licensees can order a Status Letter through the Law Society Portal. A third party can also order a status letter through the Law Society Store.

The Law Society prepares and sends electronic copies of Status Letters.

You or a third party will receive a PDF copy of the status letter by email.

What if I need one or more hard copies of the status letter?

Please order the number of status letters that you require. Explain why you need the paper document(s) in the Order Notes section.

What if I need more than one PDF copy emailed to different recipients?

Please order the number of copies that you need and complete the required Third Party Authorization form(s).

Important! If you require a PDF copy of a status letter to be sent to a third party and wish to be copied, no additional copies are required.

Processing Time

It may take up to five business days to process a Status Letter.

Specify in the Order Notes section if you need the Status Letter in French.
