Filing and Reporting

Knowing what to file and report during a placement

Beginning of the Articling Placement (Filed within 10 business days of the start)

  1. Sign the Articles of Clerkship
  2. File the Experiential Training Plan
Please note, if the principal has previously filed a Training Plan, they will not be required to refile the Training Plan each time they supervise an articling placement.

End of the Articling Placement (Filed within 10 business days of the end of the placement*)

  1. The principal and student sign the Certificate of Service
  2. The principal completes the Record of Experiential Training

The record is composed of two reports:

  1. Report on Experiential Training Competencies
  2. Report on Performance Appraisal Competencies

*All documents are to be filed within ten business days of the end of the placement for the candidate to receive Articling credit unless the candidate wishes to attend the June Call. June call-eligible candidates are subject to an early filing deadline as outlined on the Dates to Remember page.

Experiential Training Plan

If you have previously filed an Experiential Training Plan using the Articling Program Reporting Tool, you will not need to file one again. Plans are unique to the principal’s account and will be available to all future candidates upon approval of their clerkship.

How to File:

  1. Review the “Experiential Training Competencies.”
  2. Log in to the Articling Program Reporting Tool
  3. On the left-hand side, you will see “Training Plan.” Click on this tab.
  4. Complete the plan.
  5. Click “Preview and File with the Law Society” to submit.

Record of Experiential Training & Performance Appraisal Competencies

It is recommended that the Record of Experiential Training (RET) is reviewed early in the articling placement so that both the principal and candidate have a good understanding of the reporting requirements at the outset.

How to File:
  1. Log in to the Articling Program Reporting Tool.
  2. On the left-hand side you will see “Record of Experiential Training.” Click on this tab.
  3. You will see your articling candidate’s name in a table with two "Manage" buttons for each report.
  4. Click “Manage” to complete each report.
  5. Click “Preview and File with the Law Society” to submit.
