Lawyer Licensing Examination Registration and Deferral Information

Registration, payment, and the filing of a final official approved Canadian law school transcript or an NCA Certificate of Qualification are due no later than the applicable registration deadline for the licensing examination sitting selected.

The Request for Registration or Deferment form (below) is to be used by candidates who:
(i) were unsuccessful on a licensing examination and are choosing to register for a rewrite; or
(ii) had previously selected a licensing examination sitting but are seeking to defer or adjust the licensing examination sitting (select an earlier available date, select a different location or language, etc.).

Candidates must complete the required form and return it to the Licensing and Accreditation Department prior to the registration deadline for the selected sitting or the deferral deadline, as applicable, as set out on the form. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit the form several business days in advance of the deadline so that it can be processed, and an invoice sent to their online account for payment.

If you have outstanding documents, such as the LL.B. /J.D. transcript, the NCA Certificate of Qualification or any outstanding fees, you will not be permitted to write the licensing examination(s). Please see the Dates to Remember and Examination Deadlines and Dates pages for specific deadline dates for each sitting.

Deadlines for Registration or Deferment

After a candidate sends a completed form to the Licensing and Accreditation Department to register for a future sitting, an invoice will be posted in the candidate’s online account within a few business days.

It is strongly recommended that you submit the form as soon as possible and at least several business days before the deadline in order to register for a licensing examination so you may be invoiced and pay by the applicable registration deadline.

Candidates who submit the form in order to defer a licensing examination sitting must do so by the applicable deferral deadline.

Applicable deadlines are listed on the Examination Deadlines and Dates page.
