Ending an Articling Placement

Steps to Ending an Articling Placement

  • Step One: File the Certificate of Service

This form must be completed and filed by a candidate who is serving under an Articles of Clerkship or completing a National or International Articling, no later than 10 business days after the end of the articling placement.

If you wish to be called to the bar in June you must file the Certificate of Service by the early filing deadline which is listed on the Date to Remember webpage.

Both you and your principal must sign this form.

    How to File:

    1. Download and complete the Certificate of Service form

    2. File the form through your online account as an attachment once you and your principal have signed the form.

  • Step Two: File the Record of Experiential Training

Within ten business days of the end of your articling placement, both you and your articling principal are required to file the respective Record of Experiential Training online. Your report is filed through your online account and your principal’s report is filed through the Articling Program Reporting Tool.

    How to File (Candidate) :

    1. Log into your Licensing Process online account.
    2. On the left-hand side you will see the “Experiential Training” tab. Click on this tab.
    3. You will see your principal’s name in a table with a “Manage” button.
    4. Click “Manage” to complete the report.
    5. Click “Preview and File with the Law Society” to submit the information.

This concludes your experiential training filing requirements. If you do not intend on providing legal services before you are called to the bar, then there are no additional steps for you to take.

If you do intend on providing legal services after you complete your experiential training, but before you are licensed, you must file a Supervision Agreement, as explained below.

  • Step Three (if applicable): File a Supervision Agreement

As explained in this guide, when you file your Certificate of Service  form, you must complete the Supervision Agreement section of the Certificate of Service  form in order to provide legal services. This form must be signed by you and your supervisor.

Supervision Agreements will generally be approved for two distinct time periods. The first time period is applicable to candidates who have not yet completed all of the licensing requirements. The second time period is applicable to candidates who have completed all of their licensing requirements and are waiting to be called to the bar. Such candidates may apply for a Supervision Agreement until the date of the next applicable call to the bar by completing the applicable section in the Certificate of Service form. You may not provide legal services until the Supervision Agreement has been approved by the Licensing and Accreditation Department. If you seek to provide legal services beyond the approved term, you may file a subsequent Supervision Agreement.
