- approved by Convocation, October 2023 - Lawyers' fees are set each year by Convocation, through the budgetary process.

Lawyers are invoiced for fees once a year. The fee amount depends on a lawyer's status and associated category at the time of billing . Status generally refers to the circumstances of the lawyer's work (sole practitioner, employed in education, not working). Should a lawyer's status change during the year, the fee category will be adjusted upon notification by the lawyer and a refund granted if applicable. The 10% fee category is not prorated.

Lawyers who start practising, become employed, or move to a higher fee-paying status during the year are required to pay a pro rata increase in their annual fee. The fee is prorated on a monthly basis regardless of the number of days worked in a month. An adjusted invoice is prepared and posted to their Law Society Portal account after the lawyer reports their change of status. Licensees who fail to pay an adjusted fee invoice by the payment deadline date are subject to administrative suspension.

It is the lawyer’s responsibility to immediately notify the Law Society following any change in contact information or status. Updates should be made in the Change of Information section of the Law Society Portal. Changes reported after the end of the year will not result in a reduction of fees for the previous fee year.
