Mandatory Minimum Compensation

The Mandatory Minimum Compensation (MMC) is $620 per week for all Ontario-based articling and Law Practice Program (LPP) work placements that begin on or after May 1, 2023.

Where a placement cannot meet the MMC requirement, the principal or work placement supervisor may apply to the Law Society for an exemption. The following criteria must be met for an exemption to be approved:

  1. The placement must be of a high quality.
  2. The principal or work placement supervisor must declare that the employer is unable to pay MMC.
  3. The principal or work placement supervisor must have a clean discipline history for the five years preceding the application.

Mandatory Minimum Compensation Policy

For details regarding the MMC, please review the Mandatory Minimum Compensation Policy.

Exemption from the Mandatory Minimum Compensation Requirement

Lawyers seeking an exemption from the MMC requirement must complete the Request for Exemption from  Mandatory Minimum Compensation Form and submit it with applicable documentation, as indicated in the instructions on the Form.
