Continuing professional development

The Law Society offers complimentary and paid continuing professional development (CPD) programs to support lawyers and paralegals in their understanding of how to effectively use technology in their law or legal services practices, and how to manage technology risks. CPD programs in this category are organized by topic and then by date below, with the most recent programs first. Where applicable, the AccessCLE  materials for each of the CPD programs listed are included under the program title. Additional CPD programs will be listed in this section on a rolling basis, as new and appropriate CPD content in the Technology area is added to the CPD archive. Administrative law

This program has a topic titled “Virtual Hearings: Managing the Stress of Lengthy Hearings, Zoom Fatigue and the Experience of Racialized (Female) Lawyers”. That topic has been accredited for 15 minutes of professionalism content and discusses what the experience has been like moving to an online setting, and how this shift has both helped things and made things more challenging. Presenters go through tips on how to manage the stress associated with these changes, the importance of boundaries, and creating a separation from your personal space and your workspace

That topic is approximately 20 minutes in length and discusses key considerations regarding the pros and cons to virtual mediation. It reminds practitioners of the benefits and drawbacks to conducting mediation in a virtual world and reminds licensees to assess each case and decide what is best from a logistical and economical standpoint.

  2. what steps lawyers can take to ensure they are safeguarding electronic data (e.g., encryption, password security, two-factor authentication (2FA), malware, virtual private networks, and back ups)

This full-day Solo and Small Conference has several technology-related topics titled “Cybersecurity: Protect Your Law Firm”, New Research Tools for Lawyers and How to Adopt Them”, and “How to a Run a Home-Based Practice”, and a closing plenary called “Simple Tech Solutions to Accelerate Your Practice.”  The entire program has been accredited for 5 hours of professionalism content. Each of the technology sections listed above are approximately 90 minutes in length and the closing plenary is 60 minutes. The following technology-related questions are addressed:

  1. why it is important to have a cybersecurity strategy and what steps licensees should take if a security incident occurs?
  2. what research tools are available to licensees and how they can be integrated into your practice?
