Canadian Legal Advisor Certificate for Quebec Notaries
Purpose
Pursuant to the Quebec Mobility Agreement, lawyers from the Chambre des Notaires du Quebec may apply for a Canadian Legal Advisor Certificate.
The Canadian Legal Advisor certificate expires on December 31 and may be renewed each year.
A Quebec Notary who is issued a Canadian Legal Advisor Certificate is authorized to do any of the following in Ontario under Part VII of By-Law 4:
- Give a person advice with respect to,
- the laws of Quebec,
- the laws of Canada, and
- public international law.
- Select, draft, complete or revise a document for use in a proceeding with respect to matters concerning the laws of Canada, if the laws of Canada expressly authorize the person to represent a party in the proceeding
- Represent a person in a proceeding before an adjudicative body with respect to matters concerning the laws of Canada, if the laws of Canada expressly authorize the person to represent a party in the proceeding
Who Can Apply
Lawyers who are members of the Chambre des Notaires du Quebec can apply.
You must be entitled to practise as a notary in Quebec and meet the requirements set out in Part VII of By-Law 4.
NOTE: A member of the Chambre des Notaires du Quebec does not include a member who qualified for membership under the Entente entre le Quebec et la France en matière de reconnaissance mutuelle des qualifications professionnelles.
Application Process
1. Review the application process and timing
You must submit the most recent version of the application form (see below). Previous versions will not be accepted.
It may take Compliance Services up to 15 business days from receipt of all documents to process your application. We will notify you if we have any questions.
2. Provide supporting documents as set out in the application form
The application form and supporting documents must be dated within 30 days of the day you submit them.
Certificate(s) of Standing must be sent to the Law Society directly from the regulatory body. Your Certificate of Standing must not be older than 60 days when the application is ready to be approved by Compliance Services.
We will contact you if documents are missing or need to be updated.
3. Pay the application fee and any other outstanding fees, where applicable
The Law Society must receive your non-refundable application fee before we will start processing the application.

You can pay the application fee online through the Law Society Store at https://store.lso.ca/cla.
If you cannot pay online, you may pay by enclosing a certified cheque or money order made payable to the “Law Society of Ontario” with your application materials.
You must submit payment or proof of payment with your application.
