Licensing Examinations

To be eligible to write the licensing examination as a licensing process candidate, candidates must have:

1. graduated from a paralegal education program accredited by the Law Society;
2. filed the required licensing process application documents;
3. filed a completed Statement of Field Placement form that confirms that the candidate completed at least 120 hours at an approved field placement;
4. ensured that the institution they attended submitted directly to the Licensing and Accreditation Department an official transcript indicating that the candidate graduated from the accredited paralegal education program; and
5. paid all required fees (or arranged to pay them through a Monthly Payment Plan).

General Information

The licensing examination is a self-study, open-book, multiple-choice licensing examination. The competencies tested are those required for entry-level practice that have the most direct impact on the protection of the public and that influence an effective and ethical practice.

The licensing examination assesses competencies in the following categories: Ethical and Professional Responsibilities; Canadian Law; Civil Litigation; Criminal/Quasi-Criminal Law & Procedure; Administrative Law; Problem/Issue Identification Analysis and Assessment; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Litigation Process; and Practice Management Issues.

The Law Society will provide candidates with access to the necessary materials to study for the licensing examination. Candidates are permitted to print and mark up the materials and bring them to the examination testing area.
